1. Removing your Current License Plates

In order to remove your number plates, you have to first determine how they are currently fixed. They can be either screwed in place or stuck, and most of the time, the unscrewing process is simple and takes a short time. Once the screws have been removed, your license plates will be loose enough to come off, which then enables you to replace them with the new license plate.

Be sure to hold firmly to the number plate once you have removed all the screws since it might fall and bring about damage to the rest of the bodywork on your vehicle. There could also be sticky pads applied on the same license plates for additional adhesion.

If you intend to fix the new number plates using screws, you will have to keep the existing number plates for reference. This is what you will check against and will be your template for the new screw holes. If you have sticky pads holding your license plates, the removal process is also just as simple. Fishing line and dental floss are some of the most common items which can be used to remove your number plates.

Additionally, you can also make use of our fishing tackle method. This method involves a fishing line tied around the fingers and gently pulled back and forth behind the number plates. Be sure to do this all around the number plate until it has come off. The method is known to be quite effective as it will get the number plate off but will also not do any form of damage to the bodywork of your car.

2. Preparing the area for your new number plates

Before you apply for the new license plate, it is essential that the area on the vehicle is cleaned and well prepared first. In case you are planning to employ sticky pads to attach the new number plates to your vehicle, this will be crucial since the best adhesion is only possible with a clean and well-prepared surface.

A general wash solution is enough to take care of the area behind your current number plates as it effectively gets rid of the debris and any dirt. Take your time since most vehicles tend to have these areas very dirty. As such, you will have a lot to clean, and being patient means that you will have gotten the most effective results cleaning your license plate area.

Additionally, residue and leftover sticky pads will also need to be removed in order to make the surface ready for the new number plate. Soaking the entire area in a good solvent and scrubbing will be quite effective for this step, leaving you with a clean surface for the new license plate to be attached to. Removing as much residue as you can is important as the surface gets to be flatter, and with this in place, the place will be able to sit well with the rest of the bodywork.

As part of the preparation process, you might also be required to get rid of all foam left on the bodywork. When doing this, be sure to keep your pressure moderate and get rid of all the foam that was left over from the existing sticky pads. WD40 is a useful and reliable cleaning solvent, but if you do not have this, any general household vinegar will work as effectively.

Just soak for about five minutes, and you will have the results that you are looking for. It has proven to be just what you need when you are cleaning tricky surfaces, and its effectiveness has been known to work for more complicated surfaces such as porous concrete. An alcohol solution can then be used to make the area clean, and it is also effective at dissolving the remaining grease left on the surface. Another thing to keep in mind is that the area also needs to be dry before you can apply the new number plates.

3. Fitting your number plates using screws

If you decide to make use of this method, you will need to have your old license plate with you since it will be the template for this step. It will also help guide you with the alignment and place the screw holes in the same location as the new ones. Once you have decided on the preferred locations, you will be able to drill the new holes.

An electric drill will be required for this, in addition to a drill bit, a screw kit, and a marker pen which can all be bought online. Using the correct drill bit is important as it enables you to get the screws in the proper manner and position. It also makes the work easier and enables you to install your new license plates more effectively.

With the new license plates having been already drilled, you will then be able to fix them on your vehicle. The right bit is important for the correct screws, and for a more appealing finish, we recommend that you make use of colored screw caps. You can also install the license plate in a tamper-proof manner which needs some special kind of screws that have a special purpose.

Tamper-proof screws are more secure for your vehicle and cannot be easily opened owing to a number of security features that they have. For our solid 3D fonts, the digits cannot be drilled owing to the design used, and as such, you will be required to relocate your drill holes or make use of sticky pads instead.

4. Fitting your number plates using sticky pads

In order to achieve the best result, it is important that the area to be applied is clean and dry enough. This is meant to ensure that you have the best possible adhesion for the new number plates. The recommended number of adhesive stick pads per plate is six, but you might need fewer or more depending on your case.

The pads are supposed to be applied in horizontal, slanted, and even vertical positions so that they can provide you with the best grip. For the double-sided pads, leave the backing on until it is time to patch the new plates on the vehicle. Our pads are known for their strength and performance, which is the reason we recommend them very highly.

You will also be saved from having to drill your number plates, and as a result, everything will appear to be a whole lot cleaner. Additionally, the plates will serve you for a longer time as the pads are resistant to the ingress of water. If your vehicle is bent or curved, we do not recommend that you make use of sticky pads to install your license plate.

The number plate will have to flex in order to go around the bend, and in such cases, you are advised to use screws at both ends of the number plate. In other cases, you might also decide to fix the number plates using a combination of both the screws and the sticky pads.
